What is The Seventh/ Crown Chakra and how does it affect us?

The seventh chakra is referred to as the Crown. It is located just behind the top of the skull. It is the center of spirituality, enlightenment, dynamic thought and energy. It allows for the inward flow of wisdom, and brings the gift of cosmic consciousness. This is also the center of connectedness with the Goddess (God), the place where life animates the physical body. We no longer think that we are just a speck of dust, nor do we think we are God. In fact, we don’t think and project our models of reality anymore at all. We experience first hand our true nature without the need to cling to any specific idea about it and about. We have realized that our egotistic sense of I was an elaborate fiction that served us but turned out to be unreal in the end. Just like after a theatre play the actors leave the characters they played behind, so do we come back to our true self.

No longer are we inclined to go to any extreme to find solid ground to stand on. We do not need ground to stand on at all because we realize that we always float in internal peace. We see that all is part of the natural movement of the universe and that there is nothing outside of this process. Objects, events, people, emotions and thoughts; we see the perfection in everything. We deeply care for people and their problems but not get entangled in them. We are not afraid of death anymore because we know that what we truly are can not die. We understand that the body can die, but see that the body lives within Consciousness and that Consciousness is eternal.

How do we feel when our Seventh Chakra is imbalanced?

There are ways the Crown Chakra can open without the necessary groundwork to keep it in balance. Through different sort of mystical practices, deep meditation, near-death experiences or the use of psychedelic drugs, we can have deeply enriching and universal experiences. We get a glimpse of higher states of awareness and can be overwhelmed with freedom and love. These kind of experiences are often life-changing and can put us on the path of spiritual practices. In other words, for a short time, Sahasrara Chakra opens up.

However, when we come to such a universal experience prematurely, chances are that we can experience fallbacks. when we have not yet done work on opening and balancing our other 6 chakras, this experience of universe oneness will leave us again. Where we maybe thought we were liberated, we notice that all our old habits are still there and we are just as much entangled by the world as ever. We can feel down or long back to the experience we had and no longer feel connected to life. This is often called the dark night of the soul. We can not go back to our old way of living, however, we can not yet grasp how to change our lives for the better.

Energies can also become trapped in Sahasrara Chakra. Through certain practices or substances, we have jumped very high but because our lower chakras have not yet formed a rooted foundation through which we can safely climb up and come down, our energies become trapped in the Crown Chakra. We feel we do not have ground to stand on anymore and we can experience deep existential fear. Like Icarus, we were flying too close to the sun without the proper spacesuit. 

How to balance our Seventh/ Crown Chakra?

The only true way we can safely balance our energies in the Crown Chakra is through work on balancing the other 6 chakras. There are many ways we can do this, as mentioned in the previous articles, and it can take lifetimes to balance them all. Even after having a cosmic experience, when we come back to our old self, we should not exclude any of our emotions, feelings and thoughts. As long as they are with us, we need to work with them and learn from them what we can. Our spiritual evolution does not happen despite normal human life, but through embracing it fully. The trick for us normal people is to learn to enjoy this ride to the fullest. We have to accept where we are and work with what was given to us in this life. It absolutely is precious to know about higher states of consciousness. However, ultimately, they are unimportant as long as they have yet the come into our normal field of experience.

As many ways as there are to work on the first 6 chakras, there is only 1 way to fully and safely open Sahasrara Chakra. This way can not be taken by us. To put it differently, as long as there is an ‘us’ the road will be blocked. And it is not even a road in that sense. It is the realization that our sense of personal self is a ghost. When that realization truly sets in, without even taking 1 second, Sahasrara opens up and there is the experience of the Universal Soul. This takes less than even 1 second. The road toward this realization, however, can take many lifetimes. However, there is slight give away in the word realization. It explains to us that this is not something we acquire. It is not something we do not already possess. Realization just means we understand we have been looking in the wrong places, but now we remember we already knew all along.
